Here are the exact formulas used by the converter. All calculations are precise to at least one decimal place.
Feet & Inches (ft/in) — The imperial system used primarily in the United States, the UK (informally), and Canada. A foot equals 12 inches. Human height is typically expressed as 5'7" (five feet, seven inches).
Centimetres (cm) — The most widely used unit for height globally. Used across Europe, Asia, South America, Africa, and Oceania. Most medical records worldwide use centimetres. An average adult male is roughly 170–175 cm.
Metres (m) — The base SI unit of length. Less commonly used for everyday height but standard in scientific contexts. A person who is 175 cm tall is 1.75 m.
Inches (in) — A single imperial unit where 1 inch = 2.54 cm exactly. Sometimes used alone for height, particularly for infants or in fitness contexts.
Millimetres (mm) — Smaller metric unit (1 cm = 10 mm). Rarely used for human height but included for precision measurements.
Yards (yd) — An imperial unit where 1 yard = 3 feet = 91.44 cm. Occasionally referenced in older British measurement systems.
When converting from feet and inches, remember that there are 12 inches in a foot — not 10. So 5'10" means 5 feet and 10 inches (70 inches total), not 5.10 feet.
Decimal feet are different from feet and inches. 5.5 feet is 5 feet 6 inches (because 0.5 × 12 = 6), not 5 feet 5 inches. Our converter handles this correctly when you use the ft/in mode with separate fields.
For passports and official documents, most countries outside the US use centimetres. If you're filling out international forms, use the cm value from this converter.
